Antoninus Pius ?

Antoninus Pius was Roman Emperor from 138 to 161. He was one of the Five Good Emperors in the Nerva_Antonine dynasty and the Aurelii. Antoninus Pius’ full name was Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius.Antoninus Pius’ father and grandfather had both been consuls under the emperor and his family had originated in Gaul.

How did they come to power?

-Antoninus Pius came to power because of his working under the emperor Hadrian. Antoninus Pius was the advisor to Hadrian and was named Hadrian’s successor.

What did Rome look like when they ruled?

-Roman citizens had a feeling of well-being when under the rule of Pius. There were very few invasions in Rome under his rule and Rome was safe for the entirety of his reign.

What were the main accomplishments during their reign?

-The main accomplishments would be the peacefulness and maintenance of the security of rome under his rule. 

What were the challenges the leader faced?

-Not many challenges were faced by Antoninus Pius, but the few that could be said are the several invasions on the outskirts of the Roman Empire. Overall, Antoninus Pius boosted and supported the Roman economy and is known for his non-military rule, which rules out any major military challenges other than those several small invasions.

How did they handle these challenges?

-Antoninus Pius handled these challenges by taking care of the small invasions led by minor tribes outside of Rome. He did this by having the Antonine Wall built to fortify the border of Southern Scotland. But, since Antoninus Pius was not involved in the military, he trusted his generals to take care of that business.

What were the effects of their leadership?

-Roman citizens had a sense of security under the rule of Antoninus Pius, and rightly so because Antoninus Pius faced no eventful military challenges. Pius helped with the rebuilding of buildings affected by some earthquakes by offering large amounts in donations. This helped his reputation with the public.

How did the citizens of Rome view him?

-The citizens of Rome did not expect much of him as emperor, but were pleasantly surprised with his conduct as emperor with his handle of the public and the public’s property. He had made himself a good reputation with his work as governor of Asia and his work as consul under Hadrian.

What was his legacy?

-Antoninus Pius’ is most well-known for his peaceful, non-military reign and how for most of his reign, he did not make many legal reforms because he wanted to keep the same structure that Hadrian had made.

(That is why most historians think he is a boring emperor.)
